How it has helped me

  1. I can look back over the past six months and remember things that I would probably never have thought much about otherwise.

  2. Hand-sewing is easy to pick up and put down – can spend as long or as little time as you like.  Great whether you’re agitated, weary – or just need to busy your hands whilst watching TV.

  3. Sometimes small projects are all you feel like focusing on – so working on a page at a time is ideal.

  4. Challenges my imagination.

  5. Problem-solving in a small way; how to interpret something with the skills I have.

My advice to you

  1. You can be as ambitious or as restrained as you like in terms of design.

  2. And maybe you will only want to record one or two special memories, or perhaps share the project with a friend or family member.

  3. It’s a great way of using scraps of material, but it has to be said that cotton is nice to work with, and doesn’t shrivel under the iron!

  4. If you’re using cheap embroidery thread, steam-iron your work under a tea-towel in case you cook the thread!
